This month, June of 2024, I will write a poem everyday. Sometime I will stick to the form of a Cinquain, which is five lines with a count of words. I can repeat this form in five stanzas. Sometimes I will veer off the course of formality. And just stick to the number 5 as a guide to my inspirations. I will often use prompts from the Poetry Circle in a favorite organization called Garden-of-Neuro.org.
Today’s prompt is: “I want to play!”
I Want to Play Granny
Cookouts filled
With Texas accents and
The smell of cigars and whiskey
Wear new outfits, play croquet, badminton, sparklers and
Icebox rolls.
I want
To play cookout with
Grandchildren now and prepare them for
Behaving as a human beings with elegant understanding
Gratitude and…
To be
Comfortable with strangers while
Serving them and release the need
To scream for attention but instead pay attention
Where to
Listen now
To the family stories
Long tales — they grew each summer
Learning how to clean-up as stories unfolded and
Pour bourbon
To gain
Perspective on the lap
Of a great aunt laughing like
An old roller-coaster, her cheeks shiny with blush,
Kind eyes.
